Startups are often trapped with a cash draining sales team, that burns the company resources without reaching its promise. Usually the company starts reshaping its product, then investing in marketing, and yet the sales goals are not reached yet.
This usually spreads doubts, worries, and fear in the company and in its investors, sometimes it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy as it leads to the company's bankruptcy.
A better approach is to develop the Minimum Viable Product, then have the owner go down to the market with it. During his visits he will be able to explore two things:
- did the company reach a product-market fit? or how the product should be?
- and what is the sales process? where do you find your clients? and how do you seduce them?
So instead of hiring a sales team because you have the illusion that your product will be a great success and you think you know how it should be sold, get down to the market yourself and make sure that you have the right product and that you know how it should be sold then hire sales people to do it!
