Are we really humans?
It seems that I was taught the meaning of the word "human" wrong. As far as I used to think, human stood for good but once again I found myself wondering whether an act is human or not, then concluded that the act was inhumane, just like the preceding ones. Since, what I thought was an exception became frequent, today I come to reconsider my belief, and ask whether humans are innately inhumane? whether we are narcissistic?
I am afraid the answer is yes. Because if I start a list of the inhumane human deeds, I may break my wrist, fill all my white papers with a dirty black ink and yet, I won't finish the list. Yes sir, we are innately inhumane and narcissistic!
Therefore I ask you to reconsider our class among beings. Classifying our race among the beasts, since belonging to animals may be unfair to them, will restore some order on this planet. And allow me to nominate dolphins to rule over the world.
Our awareness, in our simplest ways of being, of what we are inflicting to other beings and worldly things, is practically inexistent. I believe that Chinese artistLiujin has done a rather exceptional performance that raises, at least, his own awareness about his act of being by going through part of the experience that a pig goes through before it is served on the tables. Liujin dipped himself, with a pig, in a large soy sauce jar over a fire. Mirrors distorted reality, look at an animal in the eyes before you kill it, whether a sheep, a tuna fish, or a cow, and you will see the beast that is in us.
What raised this feeling of discomfort with the race I happen to belong to, on a beautiful Sunday morning, are the pictures of James Duncan Davidson, TED's conference photographer, who is among a crew of five photographers and videographers reporting on the Gulf of Mexico for the TEDxOilSpill Expedition.
I believe it will be fair and honest to have BP`s investors, board of advisors, senior management, and every person who engineered this catastrophe, be dumped in an oil pool, then left to their own fate in a town where there are no jobs and no hopes. All of this for the sake of experiencing their very concept of life and being. Unfortunately I know that they will walk away with a down payment, just like I walk away from a customer. And we will forget, then something will remind me again of how unhuman I am...
